How Long Does It Take to Switch Broadband UK?
Worried about being left without internet when you switch broadband? The good news is switching is quicker and smoother than most people expect — and in many cases there is no gap in your service at all.
In this guide
How long does broadband switching take?
The time it takes to switch broadband depends primarily on what type of switch you are making. Switching between providers on the same network — for example moving from one Openreach provider to another — is typically quicker and smoother than moving to a completely different network infrastructure.
The full switching timeline
Here is what happens at each stage of a typical broadband switch:
Sign up with your new provider
You choose your new deal and sign up online or by phone. Your new provider contacts your current provider to initiate the switch. You do not need to contact your current provider yourself — your new provider handles this automatically.
Cooling off period
You have a 14-day cooling off period during which you can cancel without penalty. Additionally your current provider is notified of the pending switch and will prepare your account for transfer. Your broadband continues as normal during this period.
Preparation and scheduling
Your new provider arranges the technical side of the switch. If an engineer visit is required they will contact you to book a date. Furthermore your router will be dispatched during this period so it arrives before your go-live date.
Switch completes
Your new broadband goes live. For same-network switches this is usually seamless with no downtime. Connect your new router and you are up and running. Your old provider closes your account and sends a final bill.
Switching on the same network — fastest option
The quickest and smoothest broadband switches happen when you move between providers that both use the Openreach network. This covers the majority of UK broadband providers including BT, Sky, TalkTalk, Plusnet, Vodafone and EE.
Because the underlying infrastructure stays the same the switch is handled automatically through Ofcom’s One Touch Switching process. Consequently you typically experience no interruption to your service and the switch completes within 10-14 days of signing up.
One Touch Switching: Ofcom introduced the One Touch Switching process in 2023 to make same-network broadband switches faster and simpler. Under this system your new provider handles everything and your old provider cannot delay or obstruct the process. Consequently switching is now significantly easier than it used to be.
Switching to a different network
Switching to a provider on a different network — such as moving from an Openreach provider to Virgin Media’s cable network — takes longer and typically involves an engineer visit. Furthermore because the infrastructure is different your new provider needs to install their equipment before your service can go live.
The process usually takes 2-4 weeks and there may be a brief period without internet on the day of installation. However this is typically only a matter of hours rather than days.
Switching to full fibre broadband
Upgrading to full fibre (FTTP) for the first time requires a new fibre cable to be brought into your home and an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) to be installed. This always requires an engineer visit and consequently takes 2-4 weeks to arrange.
On installation day the engineer typically takes 2-4 hours to complete the work. Additionally your existing broadband will be active until your new full fibre service goes live — so the gap in service is minimal.
Will I lose internet during the switch?
For same-network switches the answer is usually no — your broadband continues right up to the moment the new service activates. However the experience varies slightly by type of switch:
✅ Same network switch — typically seamless. Your old service ends and new service begins simultaneously. Consequently there is usually no gap at all.
⚠️ Different network switch — there may be a brief period of a few hours without service on the day of installation. Plan accordingly if you work from home.
⚠️ Full fibre upgrade — similar to different network. A brief gap on installation day is possible. Furthermore keep your old service active until the new one is confirmed working.
✅ Mobile broadband backup — if you are concerned about downtime consider using your mobile phone as a hotspot during the switchover period as a backup.
Can I speed up the switch?
There are a few things you can do to make the switching process as quick and smooth as possible:
📅 Choose the earliest available go-live date — when signing up select the earliest installation or activation date your new provider offers
📦 Set up your new router as soon as it arrives — have it ready to connect on go-live day so there is no delay getting online
📞 Don’t contact your old provider — your new provider handles everything. Contacting your old provider yourself can sometimes cause confusion and delays
✅ Confirm your address details are correct — incorrect address details are one of the most common causes of switching delays. Double check when signing up
🏠 Be available for engineer visits — if an engineer visit is required make sure someone is home for the full appointment window
