Broadband Without a Phone Line UK — Your Complete Guide

Millions of UK households are ditching their landline. However many people assume they still need a phone line to get broadband. The good news is they don’t — and there are several excellent options available in 2026.

Do I need a phone line for broadband?

Not any more — no. Historically most UK broadband used the copper telephone network which meant you needed an active BT phone line to get internet access. Consequently a line rental charge was bundled into your broadband bill even if you never used the phone.

However the broadband landscape has changed significantly. Full fibre broadband, cable broadband and mobile-based home broadband all deliver fast internet without requiring a traditional copper phone line. Furthermore as the UK transitions away from copper these phone-line-free options are becoming the standard rather than the exception.

The old system: Standard broadband (ADSL) and standard fibre (FTTC) both used the copper telephone network for the final connection to your home — consequently you needed a phone line. However full fibre and cable broadband use entirely different infrastructure that doesn’t rely on the old copper network at all.

My options for broadband without a phone line

There are three main options for getting broadband in the UK without a traditional phone line. Each has different availability, speeds and pricing — consequently the best option depends on where you live and what you need.

Full fibre broadband (FTTP)

A new fibre optic cable runs directly to your home. No phone line needed. Fastest and most reliable option. Available in around 60% of UK homes and growing rapidly.

Cable broadband (Virgin Media)

Virgin Media’s cable network delivers broadband via coaxial cable — entirely separate from the phone network. Very fast speeds but limited to Virgin Media’s coverage area.

4G and 5G home broadband

A router receives a mobile signal and creates a home Wi-Fi network. No cables or installation required. Speeds vary by location. Good option for rural areas or temporary solutions.

1. Full fibre broadband (FTTP)

Full fibre — also known as FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) — is the best option for most households seeking broadband without a phone line. A new fibre optic cable runs directly from the exchange to your home, meaning no phone line is required at any point.

Furthermore full fibre delivers significantly faster speeds than standard fibre — up to 1Gbps download — with lower latency and greater reliability. Additionally because it doesn’t use the ageing copper network it’s far less susceptible to weather-related slowdowns or interference.

Installation note: Full fibre requires an engineer visit to bring the fibre cable into your home and install an Optical Network Terminal (ONT). However this is typically free or included in the package price and takes 2-4 hours. After installation no ongoing phone line is required.

2. Cable broadband — Virgin Media

Virgin Media delivers broadband via their own coaxial cable network — completely separate from the BT telephone network. Consequently no phone line is required and you don’t pay line rental.

Virgin Media offers some of the fastest broadband speeds in the UK — up to 1,130Mbps on their top package. Furthermore their network is available to around 55% of UK homes. However it’s only available in areas Virgin Media has cabled — consequently you’ll need to check availability at your specific address.

3. 4G and 5G home broadband

4G and 5G home broadband uses the mobile phone network to deliver internet to your home. A router placed in a window or on an external wall receives the mobile signal and creates a Wi-Fi network throughout your home. No phone line, no engineer visit and no cables are required.

This option has become increasingly popular — particularly in rural areas where full fibre and cable aren’t available. Furthermore 5G home broadband can deliver speeds comparable to full fibre in areas with strong 5G coverage.

Limitations to consider: Speed and reliability depend heavily on mobile signal strength at your specific address. Additionally during peak times speeds can be inconsistent. However for households in areas with good mobile coverage this can be an excellent and hassle-free solution.

The copper switch-off — what it means for you

The UK is in the process of switching off the old copper telephone network entirely. Openreach — the company that maintains the network — is progressively decommissioning copper infrastructure as full fibre is rolled out to replace it. The target for completing this switch-off has been extended to 2027 and beyond in many areas.

Consequently if you are currently on standard fibre or ADSL broadband — which relies on the copper network — you will eventually need to switch to a phone-line-free alternative. Furthermore this transition is happening now in some areas — consequently it’s worth checking whether your area is already scheduled for switch-off.
