1. Move your router to a better position

Router placement is the single biggest factor affecting Wi-Fi coverage in your home. Many people leave their router tucked away in a corner cupboard or behind the TV — consequently signal strength throughout the house suffers significantly.

For the best Wi-Fi coverage position your router as centrally as possible in your home and as high up as you can — ideally on a shelf rather than the floor. Wi-Fi signals radiate outward and downward from the router so a central elevated position maximises coverage.

Ideal router placement:

2. Restart your router regularly

Routers are small computers that benefit from a regular restart. Over time they accumulate temporary files and memory leaks that slow performance. Furthermore a restart clears the cache, refreshes the connection to your broadband provider and often resolves intermittent slowdowns.

Restarting once a week is a good habit. Simply switch it off at the wall, wait 30 seconds and switch it back on. Additionally some routers have a scheduled restart option in their settings — enabling this means you never have to think about it.

Quick win: If your internet suddenly feels slow try restarting your router before doing anything else. This resolves the issue in the majority of cases and takes less than two minutes.

3. Change your Wi-Fi channel

Wi-Fi signals operate on channels — and if your neighbours’ routers are using the same channel as yours the signals interfere with each other, resulting in slower speeds. This is particularly common in flats and terraced houses where many routers are in close proximity.

To change your Wi-Fi channel log into your router’s admin panel — typically by typing 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 into your browser. From there navigate to the wireless settings and try changing to a less congested channel. Alternatively set it to Auto and let the router find the best channel automatically.

4. Use the right frequency band

Most modern routers broadcast on two frequency bands — 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Understanding the difference helps you connect your devices to the best band for their location and usage.

2.4GHz band

For devices near the router — laptops, smart TVs, games consoles — connect to the 5GHz band for the fastest speeds. For devices further away or in other rooms use 2.4GHz for a more reliable connection.

5. Use a wired connection where possible

Wi-Fi is convenient but a wired ethernet connection is always faster and more reliable. For devices that don’t move — smart TVs, desktop computers, games consoles — connecting directly to your router with an ethernet cable eliminates Wi-Fi issues entirely.

Ethernet cables are inexpensive and easy to set up. Moreover by moving high bandwidth devices onto a wired connection you free up Wi-Fi capacity for your mobile devices, resulting in better wireless performance throughout the house.

6. Add a Wi-Fi extender or powerline adapter

If you have rooms where the Wi-Fi signal is weak a Wi-Fi extender or powerline adapter can help. Both are relatively cheap and easy to set up.

📡 Wi-Fi extender (repeater) — plugs into a wall socket in a weak signal area and rebroadcasts your Wi-Fi signal. Additionally it’s simple to set up and costs around £20-40. However speeds are typically halved as the extender has to receive and retransmit simultaneously.

🔌 Powerline adapter — uses your home’s electrical wiring to carry the internet signal. You plug one adapter near your router and another in the room where you need a connection. As a result you get a much more reliable signal than a Wi-Fi extender, particularly in older properties. Costs around £30-60 for a pair.

7. Upgrade to a mesh Wi-Fi system

For larger homes or properties with persistent Wi-Fi dead spots a mesh Wi-Fi system is the most effective solution. Unlike a single router or extender a mesh system uses multiple nodes placed around your home to create a seamless Wi-Fi network with consistent coverage throughout.

Furthermore your devices automatically connect to the nearest and strongest node as you move around the house — consequently there is no need to manually switch between networks.

🍳 Microwave ovens — emit strong 2.4GHz signals when in use. Consequently keep your router well away from the kitchen
📺 Cordless phones — older DECT phones can interfere with 2.4GHz Wi-Fi
💡 Smart home devices — having many smart bulbs, plugs and sensors on the 2.4GHz band can congest the network. Furthermore consider moving high bandwidth devices to 5GHz to reduce congestion
📻 Bluetooth devices — multiple active Bluetooth connections can cause minor interference on the 2.4GHz band
