Before you switch — what to check

Before switching broadband provider there are a few things worth checking to make sure the switch goes smoothly:

📋 Your contract end date — check when your current contract ends. Switching early may incur exit fees. Log into your provider’s account or check your bill.

💰 Exit fees — if you’re mid-contract find out how much it will cost to leave early. Sometimes the saving from switching still outweighs the exit fee.

📍 Availability at your address — not all providers are available everywhere. Check what’s available at your specific postcode before signing up.

Speed you need — think about how many people use your broadband and what you use it for. More on this below.

📦 Any bundled services — if your current provider includes TV, phone or a mobile SIM in your package make sure you account for these when comparing.

How to switch broadband — step by step

Here’s the full switching process from start to finish:

1

Compare deals for your postcode

Use FastSwitch to compare broadband deals available at your address. Enter your postcode and current monthly spend to see deals ranked by price and speed.

2

Choose your new deal

Select a deal that fits your speed requirements and budget. Pay attention to the price after any introductory period ends — some deals increase significantly after 12 months.

3

Sign up with your new provider

Complete the sign up online — it takes about 10 minutes. You’ll need your name, address, bank details for direct debit and your current provider’s name.

4

Your new provider handles the rest

Under the One Touch Switching system your new provider notifies your old one and manages the switch on your behalf. You don’t need to contact your old provider.

5

Receive your new router

Your new provider sends you a router by post. For most fibre switches you simply plug it in on the switchover date and you’re connected. No engineer visit required.

6

Switch completes

Your broadband switches over on the agreed date. There may be a short period of downtime — usually just a few minutes — while the switch completes.

What is One Touch Switching?

One Touch Switching (OTS) is a system introduced by Ofcom in 2023 that makes switching broadband provider much simpler. Under OTS your new provider handles the entire switching process — you don’t need to contact your old provider at all.

Before OTS customers sometimes had to navigate complex cancellation processes with their old provider. OTS removed this barrier and made switching as straightforward as it should be.

Note: One Touch Switching applies to providers using the Openreach network (BT, Sky, TalkTalk, Plusnet and others). Virgin Media uses its own cable network so switching to or from Virgin may involve a slightly different process.

How long does switching broadband take?

The sign up process takes about 10 minutes online. The actual switch — when your broadband transfers to the new provider — typically takes between 1 and 2 weeks from sign up.

You can usually choose your switchover date when you sign up, so you can time it to coincide with your current contract ending to avoid paying for two services at once.

Will I need an engineer visit?

For most broadband switches no engineer visit is required. Your new router arrives by post and you plug it in yourself on the switchover date.

You may need an engineer visit if:

🔧 Switching to full fibre (FTTP) for the first time — a one-off installation is required to bring the fibre cable into your home

🔧 Switching to Virgin Media — Virgin uses its own cable network which requires installation if you’re not already a Virgin customer

🔧 If there’s a fault — occasionally an engineer visit is needed if there’s an issue with the line at your property

What about exit fees?

If you’re still within your minimum contract term you may have to pay an early termination charge (ETC) to leave. This is typically calculated as the remaining months on your contract multiplied by your monthly fee.

However it’s worth doing the maths — if a new deal is significantly cheaper the saving may outweigh the exit fee within a few months.

No exit fees if: Your contract has ended and you’re out of contract, you’re in the final 30 days of your contract, or your provider has increased their prices mid-contract (you have the right to exit penalty-free in this case).

What happens after you switch?

Once your switch is complete here’s what to expect:

📧 Welcome email — your new provider confirms your account and service details

📦 New router arrives — plug it in on your switchover date and you’re connected

💳 Final bill from old provider — your old provider sends a final bill. Check it carefully for any exit fees or credits

🔄 Direct debit set up — your new provider sets up a monthly direct debit

📱 Keep your phone number — if you have a landline you can usually keep your existing number when switching

Frequently asked questions

Will my broadband go down when I switch?

There may be a very short period of downtime — usually just a few minutes — on your switchover date while the connection transfers. In most cases the switchover is seamless.

Do I need to return my old router?

Most providers ask you to return their router after switching. They’ll usually send you a prepaid returns bag. Check your provider’s returns policy — there may be a charge if you don’t return it.

Can I switch if I’m a tenant?

In most cases yes — you have the right to switch broadband provider as a tenant. However if your landlord has set up the broadband service and includes it in your rent you would need their agreement.

What if my new broadband is slower than expected?

Under Ofcom rules if your broadband consistently delivers speeds significantly below the minimum guaranteed speed you have the right to exit your contract penalty-free. Contact your provider first to try to resolve the issue.

How often should I switch broadband?

At the end of every contract — typically every 18-24 months. Out-of-contract rates are almost always higher than introductory deals. Set a reminder 30 days before your contract ends to compare and switch.
